The Wind Beneath Our Wings

Lee mentions a lot of people when she reminisces about these last years—trainers and teachers, friends and family, owners and students—people who have helped her become who she is today and for whom she holds the utmost gratitude and respect. Just a few are mentioned here: Weylin Meyer, who made riding just plain fun—whether hunting, eventing or trail riding; Gene Lewis, “the most amazing horseman I’ve ever seen”; Jack and all the USET people— “I was surprised and impressed with how nice everyone was [to me], and with how much they cared for their horses. Those horses lived like kings.” Kevin Freeman—“my absolute favorite person. He’s so humble. I’ve learned more from him than anyone.” Her sister Vicky, a successful adult amateur rider in her own right and “my best friend.” And, perhaps most important, Rudy Augustson, Lee’s husband and partner of 17 years. Rudy, also a horseman, passed away of lung cancer in 2006. “He was the kindest person I’ve ever known,” Lee remembers. “He brought such joy and balance to my life…there’s a big hole in my heart without him. I miss my buddy…” As Lee did her best to walk Rudy through those last months, she was amazed at the support of her friends in the horse community. “So many wonderful people—Linda and Wade were great. Kevin Freeman put on a benefit clinic for us; Paris Dukes made weeks of meals. I was alone…but I wasn’t.” Thanks to the support of friends like these, Lee got through something she never thought she could—and will be forever grateful.
